YOG: Last Minute Ticket Sales for Poorly Filled Sold-out Venues

yog ticket mystery

From Thursday, if there are empty seats at sold—out venues, officials will be flexible in allowing last—minute fans to purchase tickets.

Xin MSN

Aiyoh, this is uniquely Singapore. Can sell again tickets which are already SOLD meh?

What happened to those who bought tickets and went missing? And it is not one or two person leh, it is a mass Missing-In-Action scenario repeated at many venues.

The poorly filled venues reflect badly on the organizers who declared sold-out events. More importantly, Singaporeans who genuinely want to support the athletes are deprived of the chance.

In a Straits Times forum letter, sports fans claimed they had been turned away by staff at stadiums because tickets "were sold out," only to find that many seats remained empty.

The Ministry of Education had picked up about 80,000 tickets out of overall 320,000 tickets. But so far, our students are hardly interested.

Inculcating interest in sports or even Olympic values amongst our youth is important but are we using the right approach to motivate them? I think a lot of kids feel apathetic or even fearful of this YOG "monster" with so many adult rules to comply...

Nurul Shafinas Rahman Wins Singapore's second YOG medal

Nurul Shafinas Rahman
Singapore's Youth Olympics TKD team brought some cheers by winning the second medal.

Congrats to Nurul Shafinas Rahman for clinching the bronze medal in the taekwondo girls' 55-kg category.

Despite any misgivings on the YOG, the athletes deserve our fullest support. And if they are home grown, all the more we should celebrate their victory.

Yoo Nina Attacked by SHINee Fans

Yoo Nina
Yoo Nina, a little known star, was subjected to all kinds of scary attacks from SHINee fans recently.

The nightmare started when Yoo Nina "took advantage" of Jonghyun’s fame at a dinner by forcing him to take pictures with her.

SHINee fans then attacked Yoo Nina by using all kinds of methods, for example spreading of false rumors. It got to the point where the singer suffered from depression and had to get psychiatric support.

Well, I don't think all SHINee fans are so scary, maybe some over-reacted. Looking at the picture, Yoo Nina really likes to flaunt her assets, so maybe her actions got on the nerves of the fans.

And considering she is a newbie, it is always good to attract attention and get your name out. In the entertainment industry, it is a free for all.

Is YOG Singapore Opening Ceremony World Class?

yog opening ceremony
After watching the YOG opening ceremony 2010, I feel it is not comparable to Beijing Olympic Games 2008. Of course, Beijing spared no expenses and ran up a multi-billion dollar bill to showcase their talents and culture.

To be frank, the choreography for YOG Singapore opening ceremony is ok for local audience but hardly impressive when placed on the world stage.

No doubt it was a glitzy event but the performances were amateurish. There was a bit of confusion when the flag bearers did not know which direction to turn. Some volunteers also did not smile enough to spread the infectious spirit of YOG.

To whip up the kids' enthusiasm, perhaps the organizers should have tried their best to bring Sean Kingston here. It is good to have a famous celebrity to anchor the show or bring it to a climax, like what Shakira did for South Africa World Cup with her "Waka-Waka" song.

Sean Kingston's absence also took on an added significance as America was not represented. The YOG theme song "Everyone" was meant to be a collaboration involving singers from 5 continents.

The YOG opening ceremony ended up with 4 singers: Jody Williams from Africa, Steve Appleton from Europe, Jessica Mauboy from Oceania and Tabitha Nauser from Asia.

Despite the less than impressive opening ceremony, let's hope the 12 day Youth Olympics is a success and we can witness a climax during the closing ceremony to bring the entire episode to a happy ending.

Singapore Youth Olympic Games Opening Ceremony Live

Today is the Youth Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. After a 21 day journey beginning in Greece, spanning five continents and making its way through the streets of Singapore, the Youth Olympic flame reached the Marina Bay Promenade yesterday.

The YOG opening ceremony is significant as the first impression can either make or break the event. I remembered being wowed by the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games opening ceremony. The choreography, special effects, synchronicity, and ingenuity were spectacular.

In recent times, the World Cup 2010 opening ceremony in South Africa was another impressive show. South Africa was known as a crime infested nation but the opening ceremony and entire tournament changed that impression.

South Africa showed that they can host the prestigious World Cup with minimal screw-ups and its people were generous in spirit and celebrated wildly (yes, with the vuvuzelas).

If visitors want to know more about Singapore - our culture, indomitable spirit, efficiency and organizational ability, now is the time.

Singaporeans should cast aside temporarily our unhappiness over budget overrun, "dog" food, traffic disruption, etc. and support the YOG opening ceremony. For those without YOG Opening Ceremony tickets, you can tune in to Channel 5 at 7.45 pm to watch the event "Live."

With nearly $400 million spent and our reputation at stake, will YOG organizers line up a world class event which Singaporeans and the world can be proud of?

Stay tuned...

YOG Meals: Singapore Volunteers vs Athletes and Officials

yog food for volunteers
I was a bit appalled to see the food served to our volunteers for the Youth Olympic Games. White rice, six long beans and a piece of meat!

Shouldn't our kids who are standing in the hot sun be given more vegetables in their meals? How much more costly will it be if the caterer (Singapore Food Industries) add in more veggies besides the six long beans?

Judging by the adverse comments on the quality of food, this will do the reputation of SFI and SATS no good at all.

It is unbecoming of a world class nation hosting a world class event to be so stingy to the volunteers who sacrifice their time. Whether the volunteers have participated willingly or been forced to do so is another matter though.

If you look at the food which are served to foreign athletes and officials, it is a sharp contrast.

yog food for athletes
Since the caterer is buying and cooking in bulk and there will surely be extra food in events like these, why can't our volunteers eat the same food as the YOG guests?

PM Lee Hsien Loong call on Singaporeans to impress with our spirit and make the games memorable for the visitors.

If the volunteers have better food to boost their morale, I am sure they will be more willing to smile, cheer and put up a good show.

Adibasi Girl Stripped and Molested on 8km Walk

An Adibasi Girl was stripped and forced to walk naked for almost 8km. Along the way, she was beaten and molested by hundreds of jeering men who also took videos of the humiliation.

This torture went on for hours in broad daylight, in the scorching heat of April, all because the girl loved a boy from another community.

This is extremely shocking and degrading to women. In modern society, it is common to hear that "love knows no boundary" so there is nothing wrong in pursuing one's love right?

Is such tribal punishment extreme for the "crime"?

love in disguise
Love in Disguise also features Crystal Liu Yifei 刘亦菲, Zeng Yike, Qiao Zhenyun and Khalil Fong. It will open on local screens on 12 August.

Leehom has mentioned that he prefers his woman to be similar to Crystal Liu. "Of course I like Fei Fei ( Crystal ) a lot, otherwise I wouldn’t cast her in my movie! When I first started writing the script for Love in Disguise, I already added a role for her. Among the fifty-four draft versions of the script, thirty versions of it include Fei Fei’s name. At the time, I never thought of casting another actress!"

It will be nice to see the chemistry between the dashing and talented Wang Lee Hom and the stunning Liu Yifei.

Below is an interview of the pretty couple at the Bejing premier of Love in Disguise.
