Blue Moon Tonight On 2009 New Year Eve

Blue Moon

For the first time in almost 20 years, a bright "blue moon" will grace New Year's Eve celebrations worldwide.

If the skies are clear, revelers looking up at midnight will get an eyeful of the second full moon of the month.

That is one more reason for staying up late to celebrate and countdown to the new year - to catch the blue moon.

What is a blue moon? The name reflects the rarity of two full moons in a month and is linked to the proverb "once in a blue moon."

The next blue moon won't happen again until 2028, so this is something worth witnessing.
